Most image capture devices (such as digital cameras) that output JPEG are actually creating files in the Exif format, the format that the camera industry has standardized on for metadata interchange. Image files that employ JPEG compression are commonly called "JPEG files", and are stored in variants of the JIF image format. MNG is an extension to PNG that does it was designed by members of the PNG Group. PNG itself does not support animation at all. PNG was created as an improved, non-patented replacement for Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), and is the most used lossless image compression format on the Internet. Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality.

JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography.
